Garland council approves rules for wind-power devices
Garland City Council members approved a zoning ordinance regulating wind-energy devices that generate power for residential use.

Some packaging and assembly workers are left with little to do after a large customer was recently forced to end its contract.

The Garland-based nonprofit recently lost a contract that provided packaging and assembly tasks for many of its 350 workers, all of whom have mental disabilities. The client, a building-supply business, has opted to take the work in-house because of the tough economy.

Former Garland school district bookkeeper gets prison time for embezzlement
Dolores Arriola Espino, 47, pleaded guilty to embezzlement and theft from a program receiving federal funds. The former bookkeeper is to pay $92,112 in restitution and must report to prison in January, federal court records say.

Garland officer dies in hunting accident
Keith Prinz, 42, of Rockwall died Saturday after he lost his grip while spraying for wasps. He fell from the deer stand and was impaled on a metal fence post, said Scurry County Sheriff Darren Jackson.

Garland students asked to use their heads about hoodie ban
North Garland High has banned sweatshirts, jackets and shirts with hoods that could cloak faces or cover up headphones. District spokesman Chris Moore said there's a simple reason for the ban: to make sure everyone can see who's walking around.

City of Bryan suing over power agency's debt plan
The city of Bryan sued the Texas Municipal Power Agency and its other members, Denton, Greenville and Garland, alleging the three North Texas cities conspired to temporarily lower the agency's debt payments to serve their own interests. The four member cities each run their own electric companies but collectively pay the agency's debt.
